It is with great sadness that I have learned of the passing of an old friend and colleague Ray Griffiths.

Throughout his career, Ray worked in senior positions for ARC – Amey Roadstone Construction (Hanson Contracting), Associated Asphalt (Aggregate Industries), Johnson Brothers (Contractors) Limited and Kiely Brothers Limited.

Ray was instrumental in the acquisition of Johnson Brothers (Contractors) Limited to Kiely Brothers Limited in the early 2000’s.

He served on the Executive & Technical Committees for many years, for both the Road Surface Dressing Association (RSDA) and the Slurry Surfacing Contractors Association (SSCA) and was Vice-Chairman of the SSCA in 1998/99.

The RSTA was formed in 2008 following the merger of three trade associations – Road Surface Dressing Association (RSDA), High Friction Surfacing Association (HFSA) and the Slurry Surfacing Contractors Association (SSCA).

Ray also served for many years on the BSI Standards Committee (B/510/2) which is responsible for road surface treatments and also represented the UK (BSI) for many years on the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) – Technical Committee – Road Surface Treatments – (CEN/TC 227/ WG2) and was presented with a Certificate of Merit in May 2015 from BSI for serving on the CEN and the BSI Committee since 1993.

This was to be Ray Griffiths’ last CEN meeting as he retired from Kiely Brothers Limited later that year.

We at the RSTA wish to express our most sincere sympathies to his family during this difficult time. He will be sadly missed by those who knew him.
