Gridseal has been installed on the Pink Elephant Business Car Park, reputedly the longest car park in Europe. It was installed to provide a thin flexible overlay system over a concrete base to minimise reflective cracking. Gridseal is a proven asphalt reinforcement that combines GlasGird 8550 with tensile strength of 50kN/m2 in each direction and Sealoflex Sc-33, a hot sprayed polymer modified binder at 1.7g/sq.m rate of spread.
The contract involved four site visits installing approximately 12,000m2 per visit. Glasgrid was installed by ARS in 5 hours. This was followed by the application of Sealofix SC-33 the next day. The surface was sprayed with a hot PMB and took 5 hours including the application of chippings. The chippings keep the paving traffic away from the highly adhesive binder and provide an excellent key into the overlay.
Mike Riley of consultants Project Techniques said: “We chose Gridseal to solve the problems of potential reflective cracking in thin overlays because it has a successful track records. The combination of 50kN tensile strength of Glasrid 8550 plus the superior bonding and elastromeric nature of the Sealoflex SC-33 made it the obvious choice.
The laying process was rapid and efficient and it caused minimum of variation for the main contract Ringway to perform the surfacing to schedule”.
