July 27, 2011 - NEW CODE OF PRACTICE FOR HIGH FRICTION SURFACING

A new code of practice from the Road Surface Treatments Association (RSTA) and ADEPT provides best practice guidance and technical information on high friction surfacing. The code is endorsed and recommended by the Road Safety Marking Association (RSMA).

High friction surfacing (HFS) significantly improves the skid resistance of roads and is particularly useful on approaches to pelican crossings, roundabouts, junctions and crossings as well as bends with a radius of tighter than 500m on single carriageways. It is estimated that the use of HFS can result in a 35% reduction in accidents. Its cost effectiveness may be measured against the cost of lives saved. It is estimated that a fatality on a non-motorway road costs £1.4 million.

HFS is available as hot or cold applied systems. The code examines both processes in detail and provides best practice guidance and technical specification for their selection and application in order to maximise their performance and durability. Information on aftercare, maintenance and repair is provided together with technical guidance on the criteria for a 5 year performance guarantee.

The responsibilities of client, contractor and installer concerning planning and co-ordination, heath, safety and environment and work execution are also outlined and full reference is made to the relevant regulations, standards and training qualifications.

Welcoming the  new code, Howard Robinson, RSTA Chief Executive, said: “The Code of Practice for High Friction Surfacing provides definitive guidance on the right way to specify and apply high friction surfacing. It provides best practice advice for both client and contractor.”
